Well, almost all of the festivals that we know of had been religious in nature. Christmas of course being the most famous, that lasted via Christmas Day until Epiphany (the sixth January), and was preceded by the quickly period of Arrival. Epiphany accustomed to be the climax with the Christmas period and was the biggest celebration of most, but in great britain it has washed out away which is no longer celebrated. However , it is still the climax of christmas in Spain and Italy.
Easter of course , preceded by simply another quickly, Lent, which lasted via Ash Wednesday until Easter. shrove Thursday, the day before lent started out, was traditonally a day for the feast before the fast began, pancakes were traditionally enjoyed on that day, and still are, despite the fact that fasting in Lent is a custom which includes mostly lapsed in england.
May well Day is still celebrated to some degree here, although more so far away. Bringing home may possibly blossom to embellish houses used to be a growing trend here, and it was a period for merrymaking and (traditonally) a time of sexual certificate.
Whitsun and corpus Christi (in June) used to become big festivals, but again include fallen in disuse in the uk, though they are really still big in Catholic countries, The country of spain has a big Corpus Christi festival. Midsummer is still a big celebration in Nordic countries, i think it's avery big festival in Sweden and so forth
Lammas, at the start of August, is yet another festival which has fallen in disuse in the uk, but I believe is still commemorated in a big way in Ireland.
And we still enjoy harvest event here in great britain, at the end of September, even though we are no longer a very countryside nation, and harvest won't really mean a great deal to the English overall any more.
I believe most event mark the various seasons of the year, or remind us of particular religious occasions, as with Xmas and Easter. And they give people grounds to have entertaining.
